IADC Codes - Tricone Rock Bits
IADC Codes are designed to make it easier for drillers to describe what kind of rock bit they are looking for to the supplier.
Such as 12 1/4" IADC617, The first three digits classify the bit according to the formation it is designed to drill and the bearing/seal design used.
Bit Type and Hardness of Formation to be Drilled
First Digit:
1, 2, and 3 steel tooth bits (from softest to hardest).
4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 tungsten carbide insert bits (from softest to hardest).
Second Digit:
from softest (1) to hardest (9).
Third Digit
Stand for bit feature as follows:

Open Bearing, Air Cooled
